Pilates Frequently Asked Questions!

The precision in how you work is the number one difference in Pilates. When you attend a private or group class, we do not want you to just run through the motions creating the picture of the exercise, we work to get you to find the work in order to move from your deep stabilising muscles first thus supporting the bones and joints correctly, creating new muscular patterns, not just relying on your existing patterns.

The Pilates Reformer exercises are performed on a carriage that glides back and forth along the inside of a frame, which responds to your effort and the amount of resistance by the springs. Rhythmic, flowing sets of movements increase strength, flexibility and stamina while improving alignment, balance, coordination and tone. The result is a uniformly developed body with strong back and abdominal muscles.

The iPilates equipment class also involves the use of a jump board. This  way of incorporating cardiovascular exercise into your routine, is an excellent non-weight bearing method to increase your heart rate and burn  calories while engaging your core.

The Pilates chair is excellent for strengthening the core muscles, balanceing and cardio exercises. One side can be pressed down against the resistance of springs. Exercises are performed lying, sitting, and standing on the chair.

Mat pilates involves  exercises on the floor that employs controlled breathing during body weight resisted movement.

Toning, flexibility, better posture, more efficient movement – just about every benefit Pilates  has to offer can be achieved through mat work.

Pilates movement techniques like neutral spine, a properly engaged core, shoulder and pelvic stability, spinal articulation and full breathing are taught in mat classes.

Computer technology and non-playful movement are concerns for our generation of kids. As a result, many parents have concerns regarding their children’s physical condition and self-confidence.

Pilates specifically targets core strength, coordination, balance and flexibility and is a way of getting kids and teens to participate in exercise, because it caters to their various ages, fitness levels, and athletic abilities.

Benefits of Pilates for Kids and Teens:

– Pilates increases a child’s focus. Being able to centre the breath, hold various positions

for a certain amount of time, and concentrate on mind-body fitness are vital for

children to challenge their energies into one activity.

– Pilates improves body awareness and control.

– Pilates improves posture and increases strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. It

therefor also helps prevent injury on the playground or on the court

– Pilates can assist with weight management issues, because it strengthens and

   lengthens core muscles.

– Pilates provides the perfect physical and mental platform necessary for children to

excel in sports and in school.

– Pilates reduces stress by encouraging children to relax and breathe properly.

– Assists with hypermobility issues

– Improves spinal health

– Pilates assists with low muscle tone

– Pilates improves Proprioception

Miraculous changes happen to your body in each trimester of your pregnancy —but each phase presents new challenges, too.

A CUSTOMISED iPilates workout plan is therefor strongly recommended. It will help you stay fit and feel comfortable at every stage of your baby’s growth and keep you in shape throughout every trimester.

Because Pilates work engages your deepest core muscles, pelvic floor, hips and spine, you’ll develop muscle strength and memory that will help your body recover faster post-pregnancy.

Although Pilates is one of the safest workouts you can do when you’re expecting, be sure to check with your doctor before you begin this or any workout program.

While women tend to dominate mat classes, pilates holds plenty of benefits for men.

A pilates class can help fine-tune your performance by :

– developing often neglected muscle groups

– improve flexibility

– build core strength

– live more consciously

– have better sex (need we say more?)

A highly qualified teacher goes through an intense year long program with many hours lectures, practical work, practice teaching and observing. We are movement specialists rather than class instructors. This deeper level of training will help you make changes within the body. A good way to approach it is to think of the costs that you may incur from regular physio, chiro or massage treatments. While these certainly have their place and benefits, if your body is balanced correctly, you will decrease and possibly stop the need for these regular visits.
